Confectionery is going paper — fast. Retailers are delisting plastic flow-wrap, shoppers are reading materials as closely as ingredients, and paper technology has finally caught up. Modern barrier papers keep chocolate glossy and biscuits crisp without a plastic layer in sight.
How paper keeps candy fresh
The trick is functional coating: ultra-thin water-based barriers applied to paper that block moisture and oxygen while remaining repulpable. Heat-sealable grades run on existing flow-wrap lines with minor jaw adjustments, so brands can switch materials without buying new machines.
"The crunch test is the only test that matters — and today's barrier papers pass it."
What the switch really costs
Expect a 10–20% material premium over conventional plastic film at comparable volumes — largely offset by lighter shipping weights and the marketing value of a certified recyclable pack. Most of our confectionery clients break even within two production cycles, then pull ahead on shelf performance.
Start with your best seller, validate shelf life with accelerated aging tests, and roll the range over once the numbers confirm. Paper is no longer the compromise option — it is the premium one.
